This locomotive with "Bo" wheel arrangement was developed by the Gmeinder company by order of BZA Munich. In 1959 the first Köf III were put into service. They are designed for light shunting duties and for hauling works trains. They differ from all other small DB locos in that they have closed and heated driver cabs. This model corresponds to the latest production series. Its power output is 175 kW. DB have 416 of these machines in service.
