In the German Federal Railroad's program of new locomotives set up at the start of the 1950s, the E 41 electric locomotives were planned as general purpose locomotives for hauling light express, fast, commuter and freight trains on main lines and branchlines. They were developed by Henschel and BBC. These units were designed for a continuous output of 2,310 kilowatts (approx. 3,095 horsepower) and could reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). They were 15.6 meters long (51' 2"). The first units were placed into service in 1956. In 1968 they were redesignated as class 141.
