The class 110 was the first of the standard electric locomotives developed by the German Federal Railroad. They pulled D-Zug expresses, but also Intercitys when additional passenger trains had to be readied during vacation periods.

The class 110 locomotives were procured by the German Federal Railroad from 1956 onward. The maximum permitted speed of the 110 as an express locomotive was 150 km/h (93 mph). The class 110 locomotive had 4 traction motors developing a total of 3620 kW. The locomotive weighed 85 tons and measured 16.44 m (53 ft 9") over the buffers.
