After extensive trials with this locomotive, which was built by the Swedish firm ASEA, the Austrian Federal Railways bought an initial batch of 4 machines. The 16-2/3 Hz alternating current supply from the overhead line was converted to direct current by thyristors. The 4 motors developed almost 3680 kW, enabling the 77.4 ton, 15.5 m (50 ft 10-1/4") long locomotive to reach a maximum speed of 135 km/h (84 mph).
