Netherlands Railways (NS) class 1600. One powered truck. 4 non-skid tires. Illuminated triple headlights at each end. Metal body. Metal underbody. Coupling hooks at each end. Electronically controlled direction switch at each end. Length over buffers 20 cm (7-7/8").
The Netherlands Railways wanted a universal locomotive as part of their 1980's modernization program. In order to avoid the expense of developing one from scratch, new engines from various European manufacturers were extensively field-tested on NS rails. The best all-round electric was the French BB 7200, soon to go in series production. It was accepted as is and classed as the 1600, receiving Netherlands Railways colors.
These engines later also received the coats-of-arms of sponsoring Dutch cities.
