In 1978 the Swiss Federal Railways decided to order four prototypes of a new locomotive, the Re 4/4IV. Rated at 4475 kW and possessing a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph), these electrics were capable of pulling 700 tons on a level grade and 650 tons on a 2.6% grade, as well as 500 tons in passenger service on a level grade. The engine's nose was designed in wind tunnel tests and sported a red livery for improved visibility. The various colors applied to the sides reflected ongoing design testing.
