Beginning in 1955 the heavy electric locomotive Ae 6/6 was produced in quantity for express train service over the Gotthard and Simplon mountain passes.

The first 25 locomotives were sponsored by the various Swiss Cantons and bear the latters' coats-of-arms on their sides, as well as polished striping. After the "canton locomotives" another 95 units were built without striping until 1966. These engines were termed "city locomotives" and bore coats-of-arms of major Swiss cities and transportation centers.
