The class 103 was one of the fastest, most elegant and powerful electric express locomotives of the German Federal Railways. The engine was 19.50 m (63' 11-3/4") long. Each of the six axles had its own motor. The hourly rating was approximately 6,600 kW, with a service weight of 112 tons and a pulling power of 32,000 kg (7,100 lb). It was truly an engine of the future.
In 1980, the skirting under the buffers was removed and the locomotives were outfitted with single-arm pantographs.
