Additional information

Dutch State Railways (NS) class 1600. Equipped with the electronically controlled, five-pole, high-efficiency motor. 2 axles powered. 4 traction tires. Electronic reverse unit. Coupler hooks. Length over buffers 20 cm (7-7/8").

The Netherlands Railways wanted a universal locomotive as part of their 1980's modernization program. In order to avoid the expense of developing one from scratch, new engines from various European manufacturers were extensively field-tested on NS rails. The best all-round electric was the French BB 7200, soon to go in series production. It was accepted as is and classed as the 1600, receiving Netherlands Railways colors.

These engines later also received the coats-of-arms of sponsoring Dutch cities.
