Concentrated tractive effort but not especially high speeds are the performance features of the class 85 tank locomotive. The prototype of the model was built by the German State Railroad for pusher service on the steep grades of the Black Forest. The essential components were adopted from the class 44 heavy freight locomotives in order to keep the maintenance costs down for a total of only seven of these special locomotives.
