Due to war-related limitations and the increasing difficulties in obtaining raw materials, the building of the class 50 was stopped in 1942. The class 52 came into being as a simplified version. With the 6,161 mostly gray units delivered from 1942 to 1945, this class became the German class locomotive built in the largest numbers.
