The German Federal Railroad's class 50 freight locomotives were in large part acquired from the German State Railroad. They provided motive power for track laying trains, among others, and even had to step down to doing switching work.
They can be used in all sorts of situations on a model railroad layout, since the German Federal Railroad used these robust locomotives for both freight and passenger trains right up to the end of the steam locomotive era.
