Due to war-related limitations and the increasing difficulties in obtaining raw materials, the building of the class 50 was stopped in 1942. The class 52 came into being as a simplified version. With the 6,161 mostly gray units delivered from 1942 to 1945, this class became the German class locomotive built in the largest numbers. Another 86 units were built from 1945 to 1951 for the German Federal Railroad, which retired its last units with Witte smoke deflectors and the characteristic tub-style class 2'2'T 30 tender in June of 1963.
