At the end of the 1930s there were plans to put into production a series built locomotive and in 1941 50 of the type BR 23 were produced. However, because of World War II manufacture ceased.
After the war, German Railways (DB and DR) recommended production of type BR 23 and these were again manufactured between 1950 and 1959. The very last locomotive made was no. BR 23-105.
The type 23 was operational throughout Germany mainly hauling heavy passenger trains, but was also used for express traffic and occasionally for heavy goods duties.
The prototype of this model, loco BR 23-105, was delivered by the manufacturers Jung and was put into service at Minden, then Carilsheim, and lastly at Saarbrücken. Because of an accident in 1971, this locomotive was withdrawn from service. The German Association of Railway History (DGEG) was able to obtain this locomotive (fully restored) from the German Railways and have put it on show at their museum in Neustadt (Weinstrasse). It is not in working order unfortunately, but it is correct in all details.
